Headaches/Migraines and Neck pain

Headaches are common, did you know that about 1 in 7 people experience a migraine in the UK? There are, of course, many different types of headaches, and they can be called migraine, cluster headaches or tension headaches. A headache is another way your body has of letting you know there is a problem.

For some people, a headache feels like just a niggle, but for others, it can mean that they can’t concentrate or work.

Headaches can sometimes be caused by a change in the way the neck is moving and functioning, which can refer pain into the head, sometimes the temples, over the eye (or eyes) or over the top of the head. This is a problem chiropractic can help with.

Our chiropractors can improve the function of the joints in the neck using gentle careful and precise adjustments allowing normal function to restore and pain to go away.

Your chiropractor will spend time listening to you and will go through a thorough assessment to investigate the root cause of your symptoms, that will include taking a medical history, a physical exam including orthopaedic and neurological testing, and may include referring you for imaging if they think that that is necessary. They will then be able to provide you with a plan of care that is specific to you and tailored to your needs.

Brain scientists who’ve studied the effects of chiropractic care on the brain have discovered that chiropractic adjustments can change the way your brain functions. In other words, chiropractic has a neuroplastic effect on your brain. The way your brain learns to be in pain is very similar to the way your brain learns anything. It’s called neuroplasticity or brain adaptations. The good news is that your brain can also learn to stop sending you pain feelings by adapting in a good way to new inputs or interventions.

We know that chiropractic adjustments change function in a part of your brain called the prefrontal cortex. This part of your brain is actually the part that is very involved in where pain becomes a chronic problem. This might be why the earlier you have chiropractic care the better, because early chiropractic care results in better long term outcomes. It might be that chiropractic care can prevent pain from becoming a chronic problem.
